You can tell that someone is making a terrible mistake by walking out on a sale, deal, or assignment, but who are you to argue? You can’t help it if they’re feeling overworked and just want to be free of the situation. The real tragedy would be to not seize a golden opportunity when you see it. But you still want to be sure that this person is truly renouncing all claims. Ethically you’re fine, but it’s the karmic consequences you have to worry about. It would be nice if you could procure this person’s blessing, but short of that a time-stamped email will do.
