Postponing your answer is causing more harm than good. It’s understandable that you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, however it could be argued that your evasiveness is giving someone false hope. Perhaps the real reason for all the hemming and hawing is that you’re hedging your bets. After all if things don’t work out as planned wouldn’t it be nice to have something to fall back on? In the end you must make the only decision you can make and that’s to say “no”. It hurts in the moment but it also frees both of you to go on to find more suitable matches.
